Every ingredient carries a memory, a tradition, and the culture of an entire people — stirred, shaped, and orchestrated by the hands of matriarchs. This series is an emotional record of the lives and knowledge of grandmothers who migrated to São Paulo, bringing with them recipes that symbolize and evoke a lifetime of experiences.
In Grandma’s Kitchen, photographer, visual artist, and author Lissa Sakajiri — inspired by her Japanese heritage and her search to recover the recipes of her late grandmother — cooks, interviews, and shares with viewers the culinary traditions of Italian, Lebanese, Angolan, and many other grandmothers who teach us about their flavors, their struggles, and their loves.
